The village of Nikiana

Nikiana is located on the east coast of Lekfada, just 8 km from the city center, developed on the foothills of the luscious Mount Skaros. It is said to be the Homeric “Niion”, according to the archeologist and researcher Wilhelm Doerpfeld and many other contemporary researchers.

With 700 permanent residents, most of whom are farmers, fishermen and hospitality professionals; in the summer it hosts approximately 7,500 visitors.

Nikiana offers a unique in beauty and magical view towards the Pringiponisia, the oak forest of Skaros, the port for the mooring of small boats and fishing boats, small coves with beautiful beaches, numerous room rentals and hotels, traditional taverns and restaurants.

In the area of “Magemenou” (enchanted), in the small chapel of Pantokratoras, is where back in 1807, the first oath for a revolution, for the liberation of the Greeks in 1821, was given there by I.Kapodistria, Th.Kolokotroni, Katsantoni, bishop Ignatius of Arta, and many other fighters.

Heading up towards the traditional settlement of Alexandros, one will find the first Christian hermitage in Lefkada, that of “Agion Pateron”, and further up, near the traditional settlement of Kolivata, the once prosperous monastery of “St. Giorgi”.
